How To Treat Body Acne
Body acne is just like facial acne, except it's not as often talked about and sufferers tend to find it harder to treat.
Just like regular facial acne, common bacterias get trapped in the follicles and pores of our skin. This is due to oils clogging those areas up. It's a common problem, and it happens easily. The inflammatory response is what causes the acne, also known as spots, zits & pimples.
The first step to clear skin is clean skin. To help with cleaning the skin we’ve put our heads together and created a list of our top 5 body washes for acne prone skin.
What Body Washes To Avoid
Body acne treatments involve many of the same practices used on facial acne. Acne.org suggests using gentle yet effective cleansers that treat acne and wash away cleanly. You should avoid using body washes branded as “ultra-moisturizing” or “for dry skin” since they can contain oils and creams that can clog pores.
Body Acne Tip
To get the most from your body wash for acne, you should get into the habit of using them regularly. Any situation where you sweat excessively, for example after a workout or a hot day, you should be using the body wash to get rid of the sweat as it has a nasty habit of clogging pores and trapping dirt.
How To Prevent Body Acne
These things all help. Some more than others but then every little bit helps, especially if you’re in some discomfort.
Clean sponges and cloths. Acne causing bacteria has a nasty habit of sticking around on sponges & cloths so always try to make sure you’re washing with something that’s really clean otherwise you’re inviting acne into your life.
Clean Bed Linens. It’s no surprise that during the night, dead skin and sweat rub off onto our bed sheets. If you’re prone to body acne you should get into the habit of changing your bed linen twice a week. If it’s possible, use light cotton. Bed sheets made from light cotton are less likely to trap moisture, so great for acne sufferers.
Avoid Synthetic Materials. When choosing clothes to wear next to the acne-prone areas of your body, try to remember that Synthetic materials tend to be thicker than cotton. They are prone to trap oil and moisture. This leads to clogging pores which are the slippery slope for acne.
Get Rid Of Gym Germs. A little tip. Acne bacteria loves to hang out at the gym. When using shared gym equipment you are much more prone to pick up acne provoking bacteria so use a towel and anti bacterial wipes. s a favorite hangout for acne causing bacteria. So before your workout, wipe the weight and cardio machines with an antibacterial wipe. Wipe the sweat out of your body, the longer the sweat sits on your skin, the more likely it is to cause breakouts.
Eating right. Of course, this doesn’t just ring true for body acne but acne. Eating foods that aren’t processed has been scientifically proven to cause fewer outbreaks of acne. Then there’s the ‘good stuff’ that’s been proven to be good for you skin generally. Each Fish, fruit, veggies and flax seeds, and try to limit the sugary foods, especially junk food.
Say no to dairy. I love everything diary. But cow’s milk is loaded with a growth hormone called IGF-1 which has a tendency to increase the size of your acne It also helps you produce way too much sebum, this clogs the pores up and creates the perfect environment for acne bacteria to pokes it’s evil little head up. So sorry, if you’re serious about getting rid of your acne, avoiding milk is going to help.
Toners are magic. They work on the face, they work anywhere. They’ll rebalance the skin’s pH and get rid of the excess oil. Reviews - The Best Acne Body Washes Available In 2017:
Of all the best body acne products out there, we've narrowed it down to 5 based on the reviews on Amazon. We've then looked at feedback and other reviews from over 20 different websites to ensure we've got the absolute best to give you the info on.
5. Perfect Image Salicylic Deep Gel Exfoliating Cleanser
It says it’s a face wash, but as a body wash, we’ve impressed enough to give this a coveted place on our top 5 of body washes. For us, it’s the best body wash around that’s based on salicylic acid, so ideal if you suffer from milder outbreaks of acne.
Any body wash that boasts having green tea and tea tree oil is going to be worthy of my attention, I love these ingredients. Tea tree is going to kick some butt and remove bacteria, and then green tea is going to step in, calm the skin down and utilize its antioxidants to help with skin that’s already damaged by acne.
Our verdict: We like it. We like the ingredients it has. Salicylic acid is the least aggressive of its contemporaries and we’re big fans of washes that use Green tea or Tea tree oil and this has both. It really does the job well. For some it’s a little too aggressive, it can cause peeling or might not be great for sensitive skin, but otherwise, it’s a thumb’s up from us.
4. Exposed Acne Treatment Body Wash
Exposed Acne Treatment is not for the faint-hearted. It goes after acne, grabs it by the throat and says “not on my watch”. It is filled to the brim with active ingredients and treats acne like a spoilt little brat that it not going to get its own way this time.
Salicylic acid, tea tree oil, and glycolic acid all combine to pack a punch when it comes to cleaning pores and rebalancing the skin’s pH. But it doesn’t need to rely on parabens and sulfates to pack it’s punch so it’s more sympathetic to your skin. You can see our in-depth review of this product here.
Our verdict: We’re really happy with Exposed Acne Treatment Body Wash. We love that it uses Tea Tree Oil and Green Tea and we find it aggressive but without the side effects of overly dry skin or skin irritation. It also has some healing properties for skin blemishes from previous acne attacks. We love the smell of Tea Tree Oil but if you don’t then that might be the only issue.
3. Proactiv Deep Cleaning Body Wash for Acne
Proactiv do Acne products well, their toner made our top 5 lists for toners suitable for acne prone skin too. They have a good following and even some celebrity endorsements. This body wash is particularly aggressive on oily skins thanks to active ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide wash and salicylic acid. It’s effective at removing excess oil from the skin and rebalancing the skin’s pH level.
Considering the ingredients it includes, it’s pretty easy to use and people with combination or more sensitive skin have had some good results, without feeling like their skin has been dried out to the point it’s uncomfortable and overly sensitive.
Our verdict: It’s uncomplicated. It has set itself 1 clear goal and it does it well, and that is it cleans the skin. It unclogs pores and it removes excess oil. It does this really well and it doesn’t have any of the usual side effects you can expect from a body wash designed for acne. Not red blotches, no sensitivity and it doesn’t leave the skin dry.
2. Panoxyl 10% Acne Foaming Wash
We all know. There’s acne and then there’s ACNE!! For those who suffer from more severe bouts of acne, even body acne, you need something that’s going to take no messing around and that’s Panoxyl 10% Acne Foaming Wash. It’s about as aggressive it can be without a prescription.
Benzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria that cause acne. When it isn’t saving your skin for nasty zits or pimples it’s taking the time to unblock pores and have anti-inflammatory properties. Often you might expect the skin to get redder and look worse before it gets better, and some people just find it too strong, but Panoxyl 10% Acne Foaming Wash handles the side effects really well and although there are some they are vastly reduced.
Our verdict: I’d love to say there is a cream that you can put on that’s going to remove all signs of acne and make you look and feel 10 years younger, without any side effects. A miracle cure. But it just doesn’t exist. If you suffer from acne, and it’s quite serious, you might need to use this body wash before going down a prescription route.
1. Eau Thermale Avène Cleanance Cleansing Gel
Sometimes something comes along that is just simply smarter. The other body washes on this list are really effective at cleaning your skin, using a variety of different ingredients and I think you would be happy with all of them. But our number 1 choice thinks a little deeper.
They have understood that if you clean the skin too aggressively, or too well, it results in stripping the skin of oil. Sounds perfect, but what happens is the body reacts to no oil by producing far too much and before you know it, you’re back to square 1 again. Oily skin that needs cleaning before it provides a breeding ground for acne provoking bacteria.
Eau Thermale Avène Cleanance Cleansing Gel works to clean the pores and remove the dead skin cells, but it is very controlled in removing excess oil without stripping the skin of too much that causes a natural reaction from the body. It also manages the skin’s pH level really well.
Our verdict: It’s like the Stephen Hawkins of body wash. It’s super intelligent. We love it for that because it cleans but just enough to mean that over time our skin balance gets better, rather than with others where we have to continuously wash because our body causes our skin to produce more oil and it’s a vicious circle. Eau Thermale Avène Cleanance Cleansing Gel is our top choice because it’s the smart choice.
Body acne is caused by the same things as facial acne, but treating it can be different. Body washes are a little bit different to facial ones, and we've looked at just 5 of the best.
For us the clear winner is the Eau Thermale Avène Cleansing Gel.
